'After the Last Border'

Jessica Goudeau

Jessica Goudeau’s life was forever changed in 2007 when she volunteered and met a group of Burmese refugees. Since then she has spent more than a decade working with refugees in Austin, TX. As an author and activist, Jessica has a passion to ethically and authentically bring the stories of people who have become vulnerable because of war, persecution, and oppressive systems that keep them from being able to speak out to an audience that needs to hear who they really are and what really happened.

Her new book, After the Last Border, tracks the human impacts of America’s ever-shifting refugee policy as Jessica shares the real-life stories of two women who have narrowly escaped from their home countries and begin the arduous but lifesaving process of resettling in Texas. The stories she shares, reveal not just how America’s changing attitudes toward refugees has influenced policies and laws, but also the profound effect on human lives.

In her career Jessica has also written for The New York Times, Newsweek, The Atlantic, Washington Post and other prominent news sources on topics related to immigration and refugees.

She has a PhD in literature from the University of Texas and served as a Mellon Writing Fellow and Interim Writing Center Director at Southwestern University.
