Nichole Nordeman
A self-described “wrestling poet,” singer/songwriter Nichole Nordeman doesn’t shy away from life’s messier realities when performing and creating her music. Unflinchingly honest, her songs are too numerous to list but include “Slow Down,”Holy,” “Legacy” and “What If.” During the formation of each song, and played out within the lyrics, Nichole explores the nuances of life, faith and theology.
Nichole’s music career officially started back in the mid ‘90s while the Colorado Springs native was waiting tables in Los Angeles. She quickly rose to a top Christian artist with four No. 1 and seven Top 5 singles under her belt — along with nine Dove Awards including two Female Vocalist of the Year wins. But at the height of her career Nordeman stepped out of the limelight to work on saving her marriage and raising her babies. The union didn’t last, but she says she’s still grateful she made that decision because she wouldn’t have forgiven herself if she didn’t give it her full attention. She also didn’t have to miss a minute of her children’s all-important early development.
Returning from a 10 year hiatus, The title of Nichole Nordeman’s newest album, Every Mile Mattered, hints at its overall theme: reflections on her past and how far she’s traveled, despite traipsing over some very rocky roads. Another song, “Sound of Surviving,”bears an equally appropriate title. In that one, she proclaims, “This is my farewell to fear. It is my whole heart deciding I’m still here and I’m not done fighting. This is sound of surviving.”
But the song that matters most to her is the confessional piano ballad, “Dear Me,” a deeply personal reflection of “who I used to be and who I am today.”“It’s a letter to my younger self about all the things I’ve learned; the many ways I see life and faith differently now,” she says. “The things that I feel like I got wrong or maybe got right, and all the grace in accepting both.”
